Ukraine’s Russian-occupied nuclear power plant lost power supply now repaired
Power supply to Ukraine’s Russian-occupied nuclear power plant was cut off, which is now being repaired. The ministry said the plant switched on 20 backup generators to meet its power needs after losing grid connection.
Ukraine’s Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant lost power after its last remaining line through Ukrainian-controlled territory was disrupted but has been repaired, the energy ministry said Saturday.
The plant was taken over by Russia in March 2022 and is no longer generating electricity, but is needed to supply electricity to cool one of its four reactors which is in a state of ‘hot conservation’ – Which means that it has not been completely closed.
One power line to the plant was disrupted late Friday, while the last, 750-kilowatt, line broke at 2:31 a.m. (0031 GMT) on Saturday, according to a statement published by Ukraine’s Energy Ministry on Telegram. “This is the eighth blackout that occurred at the (Zaporiziya plant) and could lead to a nuclear catastrophe,” the statement said.
The ministry said the plant switched on 20 backup generators to meet its power needs after losing grid connection. It said at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) Ukrainian experts repaired the 750-kilowatt line which is now once again bringing power to the plant.
