Billie Eilish Gives Emotional Performance of ‘Barbie’ Song ‘What Was I Made For?’ on ‘SNL’: Watch, The pop star received a special intro from “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig and host Kate McKinnon.
While Billie Eilish was a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, she imitated a poignant Barbie moment.
On December 16, the 21-year-old pop star made her third appearance on the venerable sketch comedy program, bringing the television premiere of “What Was I Made For?,” which was featured in the Greta Gerwig-directed summer blockbuster.
Before her moving performance, Gerwig and the evening’s emcee, Kate McKinnon, who also appeared in Barbie, gave Eilish a surprise introduction.
Eilish sang the moving ballad with her brother and collaborator Finneas accompanying her on the piano. A heartfelt tribute to Barbie’s iconic montage scene was also included in the understated performance. This time, it incorporated childhood movie clips from former and current SNL cast members, such as McKinnon, Maya Rudolph, and Kristen Wiig.
Earlier this year, “What Was I Made For?” reached its peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 14. In addition, the song is nominated for five Grammys in 2024, including record and song of the year.
“I really want Barbie’s heart song,” Gerwig exclaimed, according to Eilish, who recently related the story of writing the ballad with Finneas to Jimmy Fallon. And that kind of stayed with us. That stuck with us.
She went on, “I feel like [the song] brought women together in a way that I haven’t felt part of like that.” “It gave me a great feeling.”
Eilish spread some holiday cheer with a moving performance of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” during her second SNL appearance. Finneas on piano and Grammy-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride joined her once more.
The third album by Eilish, which is a follow-up to 2021’s Happier Than Ever, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, is presently being finished.
